E-Petitions in Parliament?

Since its launch in November, 2006, the Downing Street e-petitions site has attracted some 29,000 petitions. Over half have been published and have received 5.8 million signatures, originating from over 3.9 million different email addresses.

Online Campaigning

The eDemocracy team is about to embark on a piece of research that explores how new technologies are being used in the context of electoral campaigns. The research will have an international focus, comparing the online strategies deployed in a range of countries (from the US to Russia) and asking what lessons and implications there are for the UK.

The research has been commissioned by the Electoral Commission, which is concerned with any regulatory issues that may arise from online campaigning. Our 18-month project will culminate in a written report and a project website will be launched on which we'll showcase various online campaigns and invite discussion about them.

Lords dip their toe into the Blogosphere...

The eDemocracy team is pleased to announce that we are currently working on an innovative pilot scheme with the House of Lords.

Lords of the Blog is an experimental project to encourage direct dialogue between web users across the world and Members of the House of Lords. Commissioned by the House of Lords, the pilot project is conducted by the eDemocracy team who are working directly with Members of the Lords to bring their blogs to the wider online audience.

We are currently in the developmental phase of this project and continue to recruit and training contributing Members.

The Hansard Society will evaluate all aspects of this pilot and capture data about audiences of the blog in order to assess its reach and value.

We hope to launch the pilot in the near future - watch this space.
